North Bay Corporation Center for the Environment
Click Here to learn how we can recycle 90% of your garbage
North Bay Corporation is in the design phase for construction of the North Bay Corporation Center for the Environment. This state-of the-art materials recovery facility is designed for sustainability and will expand the management of Sonoma County's waste disposal far beyond California's current recycling mandates.
What is a Materials Recovery Facility?
A Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is a state-of-the-art plant designed specifically to recover recyclable materials from our waste stream. Through a series of manual and automated sort processes recyclables are classified into separate areas, baled and transported to a re-manufacturing facility where they can be further processed and made into new marketable materials.
Go Green
North Bay Corporation and Redwood Empire Disposal (NBC/RED) encourages residents and businesses to "go green" by reducing the amount of garbage they create and by enhancing recycling and waste reduction programs. NBC/RED takes great pride in practicing environmental stewardship in our own day-to-day operations. The following are just a few of our latest "Green" operational practices:
Split-bodied Collection Vehicles
You may see new split-body collection vehicles in some communities. These trucks have a split compartment so drivers can pick up both trash and recycling in one stop. These new eco-friendly vehicles decrease the number of trips through neighborhoods by one-third, while the two-compartment trucks keep trash and recycling materials separated. The amount of fuel and energy saved, not to mention reduced traffic on highways and neighborhood streets, is an important step for the environment.
Organics Recycling
For residents interested in starting a backyard organics recycling program at home, we are offering the Smith & Hawken BioStack Composter at our cost of $69.00. Contact Customer Service at 800-243-0291. Composting organics helps to cut down on materials that were previously landfilled. Organics recycling saves natural resources and promotes healthy soils.
Greenhouse Gas Inventory
NBC/RED recently signed up with the California Climate Action Registry and is in the process of conducting a greenhouse gas inventory. An inventory is necessary to assess what our current emissions are so steps can be taken to identify potential reductions and develop an action plan to have a lighter step on the earth.
Buy Recycled
Recycling programs are dependent on good markets for post-consumer materials. Consumers help to keep markets strong buy purchasing products made from recycled materials.
