If your business uses produces that are labeled corrosive, poison, reactive, toxic or flammable, they you are generating hazardous wastes. Wastes such as lab and photo chemicals, paints, solvents, pesticides, acids and printing inks are considered hazardous and require special handling.
The Novato Sanitary District provides a program for eligible businesses to dispose of small quantities of hazardous wastes. It’s a safe, legal and affordable way to dispose of these wastes.
You are eligible to participate in this program if you:
- Are a business located in the City of Novato or within the Novato Sanitary District’s service area
- Are a conditionally exempt small quantity generator (CESQG), as defined byt eh CA Health & Safety Code
- Generate less than 100 kilograms of hazardous waste per month. (The equivalent of 220 pounds of 27 gallons of hazardous waste per month.)
- Generate less than 1 kilogram of extremely hazardous wastes, or less than 50 kilograms (approximately 13 gallons) of chlorinated solvents per month
Quantities of waste oil, latex paint, fluorescent tubes and lead acid batteries do not have to be included as part of you monthly hazardous waste accumulation. You may only dispose of up to 27 gallons of hazardous waste per month.
You must make an appointment to participate in the program. If eligible, call the Hazardous Waste Hotline at 415-892-6395. Leave your name, company and phone number. When we return your call, we will ask you to inventory the hazardous waste you want to dispose of, with details of the type, amount, size and number of containers. Check the containers for product trade names or chemical constituency. Also check the Materials Safety Data Sheet to provide accurate product descriptions. In addition, you must have a California EPA ID number to dispose of your waste.
The drop-off program for businesses is available by appointment ONLY on the first and third Sundays and Monday of each month. The Facility is located at 7576 Redwood Boulevard, to the rear of the Novato Recycling Center. To schedule an appointment, call 415-892-6395.
Prices range for $2.00 to $45.00 a gallon, depending on the type of waste and method of treatment and disposal. You will be notified of the estimated charge when you make your appointment. When you arrive at the Facility, we will inventory the waste and you will be charged for the actual amount and type brought to the collection program.
