Recycle Household Batteries



Household batteries are considered hazardous waste, and CANNOT be placed in recycling or trash. What do I do with them??? It's easy, just keep a zip lock bag near your penny jar at home and take them to these collection locations:


All Long's Drug Stores and Whole Foods Market locations
now accept household batteries from the public at no cost. Check with the Customer Service Departments for in-store location and directions. Visit www.recyclenow.org. for more locations in your area.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) are products labeled:
  • Warning
  • Toxic
  • Caution
  • Corrosive
  • Flammable
  • Danger
  • Poison
    or that carry other precautionary statements. These products require special handling and should never be disposed of in the regular garbage.

    In addition, certain other products are considered hazardous waste:

    • Televisions
    • Computer Monitors
    • Propane Tanks
    • Mercury containing products such as Thermometers
    Hazardous waste should be stored in a safe, cool and dry location until transported to a HHW facility.

    Transport Tips:

    • Bring your waste in its original container.
    • Do not mix wastes together.
    • Transport waste in your trunk, away from passengers and pets.
    • Make sure containers are NOT leaking and packed to prevent spills.
    • Do not transport more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds at one time.

    Important:

    • Illegal dumping of hazardous waste is punishable by law.
    • The following facilities are for Novato residents only. Be prepared to show proof of residency.

    The Novato Sanitary District and the City of Novato operate a permanent drop-off facility for household and small business hazardous waste. Located at the Novato Recycling Center, the facility is open by appointment only on the first and third Sunday and Monday of each month.

    What to Bring to the Facility:
    • Automotive Products - brake fluid, transmission fluid, old gasoline (with container), waxes and polishes, motor oil, filters and batteries.
    • Household Cleaners - ammonia, bleach, disinfectants, floor and furniture polishes, tub, tile and toilet bowl cleaners, oven and drain cleaners, spot removers, metal cleaners, rug cleaners.
    • Paint and Building Products - oil and water-base paint, paint thinners and removers, spray paints, wood preservatives and stains, turpentine, cements and sealers, solvents.
    • Lawn and Garden Products - pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, ant and roach baits, snail and slug baits
    • Miscellaneous - pool chemicals, photographic chemicals, flea products, moth crystals, small amounts of asbestos, small propane tanks from barbecues or camp stoves.
    • Household batteries, nail polish remover, flourescent tubes and bulbs.
    What NOT to bring:

    The following items will not be accepted:

    • Explosives or ammunition. Call your local police or County Sheriff.
    • Asbestos in large amounts. We can only accept up to two (2) - 30 gallon size trashbags of asbestos.
    • Radioactive waste.
    • Medical or biological wastes. Call the County Health Department.
    • Business or commercial waste. Call the Novato Business Hotline at 892-6395.
