Motor oil recycling

Do you change your own oil?

Many households in Novato have a "do-it-yourself " oil changer. If you're included in this statistic, you know that the job is not done until you've properly disposed of the used oil and filter.

Why recycle? Used oil contains some very nasty stuff: byproducts from burning, metals from your engine, and the petrochemicals themselves. When it's put in the trash, it eventually mixes with other liquids in the landfill, to seep out as "leachate" that pollutes groundwater. Poured on the ground or into a storm sewer, it enters the environment even more directly. Just a little does a lot of harm: one gallon of used oil can contaminate a million gallons of drinking water!

Recycling oil also helps reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Used oil is re-refined to produce new oil, with a tiny fraction of the pollution caused by refining crude oil.

Recycling oil and filters is easy in Novato. You can dispose of used motor oil and filters at several locations. If you transport the oil yourself, be sure to use a clean container with a tight fitting lid.

Tips for used motor oil and filter recycling

Never mix used oil with other liquids such as antifreeze, brake fluid or gasoline. Drain filters very thoroughly by punching a hole in the filter and letting it drain into a container for several hours or overnight.
